NASS 2024 Summer Conference Highlights

Washington, D.C. — 28 Secretaries of State, two Lt. Governors, senior staff members, as well as nonprofit and private sector representatives met for the 107th annual summer meeting of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). The conference was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 9-12. Many productive discussions took place on important issues including artificial intelligence, election administration, cybersecurity, business services, international relations and more. 

On July 12, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon was sworn in as the association’s President, along with his new Executive Board. View the NASS 2024-2025 leadership release here.

Conference Highlights

Speakers: Over 25 states shared presentations on their programs and practices. See the agenda here for links to many of those informative presentations. Additionally, various organizations joined the con­ference to present on their work including: the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), National Voter Registration Day, and U.S. Department of State Office of Foreign Missions.

National Awards:
During the July 11 luncheon, the Office of the Iowa Secretary of State received the 2024 NASS IDEAS Award, which recognizes innovation and excellence in state programming for their Recruiting a New Generation of Poll Workers program. View the NASS release here.

On July 12, NASS announced it will posthumously award the 2024 Margaret Chase Smith American Democracy Award for political courage to Mr. Johnnie Jones. Jones was nominated by the Office of the Louisiana Secretary of State for his work as a civil rights leader and attorney. He is best known for successfully organizing the Baton Rouge, Louisiana bus boycott, which inspired the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. The award will be presented at the NASS 2025 Winter Conference in Wash­ington, D.C.

NASS held a #TrustedInfo2024 video contest during a July 11 workshop. The contest was designed to encourage NASS Chief Election Official Members to creatively highlight their offices as the trusted sources for election information. Workshop attendees were able to vote for their favorite NASS Mem­ber video based on its content, production value and creativity. Out of 12 notable submissions, the Of­fice of the Indiana Secretary of State won the trophy for best video. View Indiana’s award-winning #TrustedInfo2024 video here.
