[SOS] Secretary Lawson’s statement on Senate Bill 539 regarding Notaries Public
Start Date: 2/1/2017Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 2/1/2017
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 1, 2017) – Today, the Indiana State Senate passed Senate Bill 539 regarding Notaries Public out of committee. Secretary of State Connie Lawson supports the amended bill and remains optimistic about the future of introducing new technologies of remote notarization to the process. Below is her statement on the issue.

“As Secretary of State, I am strongly supportive of legislation to authorize Indiana notaries to conduct notarizations by means of a secure, recorded two-way live audio-video call. Indiana citizens are already able to access these services today from out-of-state notaries and I am committed to empowering Indiana notaries with reliable technologies to conduct notarizations in a safer, more secure and verifiable manner. Senate Bill 539 that passed out of committee today does not yet provide this opportunity to Hoosiers, not due to a lack of support for remote notarization, but the desire to clarify that remote notarization is authorized as an optional means for conducting notarizations for those who choose to engage. I am confident that by continuing to work together we shall find a path that authorizes remote notarization this session as an additional consumer and business-friendly option for our notaries, while also ensuring businesses and consumers can always choose traditional notarial methods if they wish.”
